A Letter to Educators Dear Educator: Thank you in advance for allowing me to have the opportunity to share the story of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker with your students. My small part of this wonderful adventure has inspired me to combine several of my life-long passions into a project that I hope will have lasting effects on students and the environment. Writing poetry, a love of children’s literature, enjoyment of nature and wildlife - especially birds - and an eagerness to work and interact with children led me to create Big Woods Bird: An Ivory-bill Story. First and foremost, I believe that it is important for children to understand the wonder of nature. They also need to begin to understand the importance of preserving our natural areas through conservation. For a first grader, this may simply be an introduction to the big black and white woodpecker. A third grader may be inspired by the idea of searching for an endangered species - canoes, swamps, etc. Older students can learn about the scientific process, habitat destruction, and be encouraged to think about his or her role in the future of our environment. At this level I often field questions about writing, publishing, and other topics related to the production of Big Woods Bird. Through questions and answers, I like to let the students lead the discussion into areas that interest them. I am looking forward to my visit to your school. |
